Quizzes

The D2L learning management system has a built-in quiz area. Here you can create quizzes for students to complete online through D2L. Quiz questions can be built by the instructor personally, or often times quiz questions are available through the textbook publisher and generally can be imported into the question library for instructors to use. This guide will discuss how to build a new quiz using instructor created questions.

Step 1

Navigate to the Quizzes area from the Assessment dropdown menu.

Step 2

Click on the New Quiz button.

Step 3

Type the title of your quiz in the Name field, then using the drop-down menus, select the appropriate Category and Grade Item. If you do not have pre-created categories and grade items, you can create a new one by clicking on the add category and add grade item links next to the correlating fields.

Step 4

Checkmark the box next to allow automatic export to grades. This setting will allow transfer of the quiz grade to the correlating grade item you selected in your gradebook. If your quiz does not require written responses and you want the system to automatically grade students’ quizzes, checkmark the box next to allow attempt to be set as graded immediately upon completion. If your quiz requires you to grade written responses, you will need to mark students’ quizzes as graded before they are transferred to the gradebook.

Step 5

Remain in the Properties tab. Scroll down the page and select your desired settings for Optional Advanced Properties. For maximum test security, it is advised to select both Disable Right-Click and Disable Pager Access options.

Step 6

Click on the Restrictions tab. Using the dropdown menu beneath Status, select Active when you have finished preparing the quiz and are ready for students to view and complete it. Assign specific start and end dates

Step 7

Remain in the Restrictions tab. Scroll down the page to the Timing section. Select your desired settings for quiz time limits and submission options. If you set a time limit, make sure you mark the box next to enforced or students will not be required to abide by the time limit. It is also recommended that you select the Auto-Submit Attempt option.

Step 8

Click on the Attempts tab to identify how many times students can take the quiz and how their quiz will be graded.

Step 9

To create questions in your quiz click on the Layout/Questions tab and then click the Add/Edit Questions button.

Step 10

Click on the New button and select the type of question you want to create using the dropdown menu. You have several question options to choose from, but for this example we will choose a Multiple Choice Question.

Step 11

Type the Point value the question is worth in the Points field. Then, type the quiz question in the Question Text box.

Step 12

Next, scroll down your page and type in the multiple choice responses you want students to select from. Then, underneath the Weight (%) column, type in 100 next to the correct multiple choice answer. The remaining answers should maintain a 0 next to the Weight (%) column.

Step 13

Click the Save button to save this question and return to the main quiz question screen, click the Save and Copy button to save this question and make an exact replication of it to modify, or click the Save and New button to maintain the question type but clear your question and answer sections.

Step 14

When you have finished creating your quiz questions, click on the Done button at the top right-hand side of the screen.

Step 15

Click on the Save and Close button to return to your main Quizzes page.
